1956-08-Pavilion-01

Outdoor dance floor at the Sauble Beach Pavilion, late 1950s. The flowerpots you can see ringing the floor had little lights in them, and after dark when they were turned on it was quite magical.

I will always have great affection for the piano you can see on the stage. Swing bands and country bands in the 1950s and 1960s used to use it all the time, but by the 1970s the rock acts were less interested. So it was moved to the back of the Pavilion’s indoor floor and only brought out occasionally. On slow afternoons, though, I used to go over to the Pav and sit there playing it all by myself. It helped me learn how to write music.

(It was always hard to keep it in tune! Lakeside weather.)
